God directed them to freedom before He warned them of their potential for bondage.
There is a charm about the forbidden that makes it unspeakably desirable.
- Mark Twain
Gluttony was the first transgression.
Over indulgence is what we all think of when we think of the sin of gluttony, but it’s really deeper than that.
Laute- exclusively eating food that is too luxurious, exotic, or costly.
Studiose- eating food that is excessive in quality (too daintily or elaborately prepared)
Nimis- eating food that is excessive in quantity (too much)
Praepropere- eating hastily (too soon or at an inappropriate time)
Ardenter- eating greedily (too eagerly)
Gluttony is a form of selfishness.
Gluttony has become associated with substance abuse as well, though not just the abuse of food.
“…were we not incredibly gluttonous in our substance abuse? Did we not drink every drop and clear out every bag of drugs as if something inside of us required us to do so? And if we continue with our excessive behaviors, we will soon find that we become impossible to satisfy.”
-Justin Kunst
Gluttony is an expression of idolatry.
God created food to sustain our bodies and to be enjoyed.
Since in eating pleasure and necessity go together, we fail to discern between the call of necessity and the seduction of pleasure.
- Gregory the Great
Who is it, Lord, that does not eat a little more than necessary?
-Augustine
First Movement - The first movement in any sin is the cause of the sin.
What drives gluttony? The desire to be full.
The desire to be full comes from too much experience feeling empty.
It feels good to feel full, but when we feel empty, we feel vulnerable, like we are missing something integral to our happiness.
Good food is supposed to be enjoyable for us, but things cross a line when our fulfillment comes from the food rather than the One who provides it.
The answer to gluttony is temperance.
God is more concerned that we say yes to the right things than He is that we say no to the wrong things.
1. Get real about gluttony
2. Get real about recovery.
