Sermon Notes
Last week we learned that worship is living a sacrificial life. Romans 12:1-2 says that renewing your mind and not conforming to the world is worship.

But worship can also be singing as well and that’s what we’re talking about today - where does singing fit into worship?

Ephesians 5:15-21

Sermon Notes on Ephesians 5:15-21

1) Make the most of the time you have on this Earth by worshipping.

2) Don't get drunk on alcohol but instead be filled with the Spirit.

3) Song helps us be filled with the Spirit by changing our hearts and emotions to be more in line with our minds.

4) Giving thanks throughout the Bible is often tied to singing.

5) Singing is meant to be a social event.

Colossians 3:13-16

Sermon Notes on Colossians 3:13-16

Music reminds us to live in harmony with one another.
Some reasons why we sing:

1) Songs remind us of the truths about God and help us retain that information.

2) Songs have a way of directing our hearts and changing our emotions to be more in line with the reality that we already know in our heads.

3) Singing together promotes harmony and unity in the Church.
Extra Study Scriptures & Questions
Singing is referenced throughout the Bible. Check out these other references and discuss with your family / friends / small group what they could mean for you and I today.

Matthew 26:26-30

Isaiah 6:1-13

Questions for Matthew 26:26-30 and Zephaniah 3:17

These Scriptures tell us that God sings. And not only that - in the Matthew passage - understand that Jesus was probably leading them in worship. It was common at Passover for the Rabbi to sing a line from the Psalms and then the crowd (his disciples) would echo back that line or sing a common refrain like Hallelujah.

1) What does it mean to you that God sings? That God (in flesh, Jesus) led the disciples in worship?

2) We can't possibly know the answer to this on this side of heaven but what kind of song do you think God sings over us?
Luke 9:21-27 Questions
How does this teaching of Jesus line up with Paul's teaching about a "living sacrifice?" How is this worship?

How do one take up your cross daily? What does that look like? How can you start implementing this into your life?
Questions for Acts 16:22-26 & 1 Samuel 16:14-23

1) Why do you think Paul and Silas started singing hymns together in prison?

2) How do you think the other prisoners responded? We're just told that they listened.

3) What power did music have over King Saul?

4) What power does music have over us today and how could it influence the unbelievers around us? How have you seen it influence people that you've known (or yourself)?
Isaiah 6:1-13 Questions
God showed up and Isaiah felt the weight of his sin. Why is it important to feel the weight of our sin in order to be a living sacrifice?

What was Isaiah response to "Who can I send?" What example does that set for our life?

God's plan for Isaiah was for him to have a numerically unsuccessful ministry. Actually, his ministry would turn people away from God because of their hard hearts. What does this teach us about being a living sacrifice?

1 Corinthians 2:14-16

Questions for Deuteronomy 31:19-22

1) What does this passage teach about music and helping us remember truths about God or the things he tells us?

2) What are some worship songs / hymns that you learned when you were little that you can STILL recite word for word today? How have they reminded you of truths about God throughout the years?

1 Samuel 16:14-23

Romans 3:23-24

Romans 4:5

Romans 5:8

Questions for 1 Samuel 16:14-23
What do these verses tell us about salvation? What response should we have to God & Jesus based on these verses?

What is Paul not ashamed of the gospel? How should this affect us?
