Galatians 4:4-7

Context:
In Galatia the Judaizers had come in and were telling Paul’s converts that they had to become circumcised and put themselves under the Mosaic law in order to be saved. - Paul wrote this letter to correct that false teaching
I. The timing of His coming. 4a

The context is needed to get the meaning of this phrase.
- Paul was making the arguement that Salvation was not with Moses’ and the Law but with Abraham and the promise.

God promised to save through Abraham’s offspring. He was promised an inheritance of salvation and the Scripture said that Abraham believed the promise so God counted his belief as righteousness.
- So Righteousness came by FAITH and not by the Law of Moses.

God gave the Law so that the whole world would know what sin is… how hopeless we are.

The promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.”

Galatians 3:22

The point Paul is making here is that Christmas was part of a grand order that God had masterfully designed.

Through the promise made to Abraham and through the law given through Moses… God built a hunger for the offspring of Abraham, Jesus Christ.
- That hunger lead people to believe and receive the promise that comes by faith.
II. The object of His coming. 4b

In the fullness of time, who did God send?
· The Word (John 1:1)
· The One Who was God (Phil. 2)
· The Liberator (Romans 8)
· The exact imprint of God’s nature (Hebrews 1)

The incarnation is THE miracle of Christmas.
III. The purpose of His Coming. v5

The two-fold purpose in His coming.
1. To Redeem us
2. To Adopt us
1. To Redeem us:

Remember back to 3:22, the whole world was imprisoned by the law.
- In Romans 8 we learned that the flesh is weak and how for this reason we were not able to keep the Law.
- All mankind was imprisoned by the law of God and under His condemnation.

So, Jesus was sent- born of a woman under the law, and he subjected himself to the law.
- This was so that He could fulfill the law and by fulfilling it set us free from it.

He came to give us adoption.

His dying on the cross served as a perfect offering for sin. His resurrection made him available to all who would believe in Him… all who believe in Him receive Him and are in Him… all who believe in Him and are in Him BELONG to Him…

Galatians 3:29

Believing in and receiving Christ, being in Him, and belonging to Him makes you heir to all the privileges of the one and only Son of God…
- Just as Jacob made Ephraim and Manasseh heirs of his blessing, not because they were his children by birth, but because he adopted them as his own children and
because they belonged to His favorite son.
- THIS IS EXACTLY what God the Father has done with every believer. He adopted them and made them heirs of the promise… heirs of salvation- because they belonged to His only son Jesus.

He sent His one and only Son so that by His victory He could win believers out of captivity and bring them home as sons and daughters.
IV. The result of His coming. 6-7

Here Paul is saying to these believers who have been led astray by false teachers, who themselves had been led astray by their thirst for dishonest gain to "Listen, IT- IS- DONE.”
- You- Are- Sons
- God has sent the spirit of His son into your hearts…
- He cries out from within you “Abba Father.”

“YOU ARE NO LONGER A SLAVE!”
- “You are a son." “and if a son… then an heir.”
- And it is “through God” that it has all been done.

Why be enslaved again after you have been set free?
Why be imprisoned under the law, now that God has sent his Son to redeem and adopt you?
- Instead, just be who you are in Christ… a son… a daughter… one who is indwelt by the Spirit of Jesus, who speaks through you to the Father…
- An heir of salvation… salvation that has been accomplished through God at just the right time and in just the right way.
Conclusion:
Celebrate Christmas by falling into the loving arms of the God who sent His son to redeem so that you are adopted into the heavenly family.

Believers, turn a deaf ear to Satan’s accusations and the doubt that might spring up in your hearts and instead turn an open ear to the Spirit of Jesus within you that is in perfect agreement with His father.

To those yet to believe, receive the greatest Christmas gift you will ever receive between now and the end of eternity… the person and the work of Jesus.
- Got has given you the gift of redemption and adoption…
