Hebrews 11:1-2
1Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation.
Philippians 4:9
What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

1 Corinthians 11:1
Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
1st Truth: Whatever your VOCATION, see it as a calling from God (Col. 3:23-24).

Colossians 3:23-24
23Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,24knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
(1) Give and ALL-OUT-EFFORT (Col. 3:23)
(2) Remember who brings the ultimate ACCOUNTABILITY (Col. 3:23)
(3) Look forward to your future AWARD (Col. 3:24)
McCormick fed his country as truly as Washington created it and Lincoln preserved it.

Herbert Newton Casson

"McCormick advanced civilization and destroyed famine by fulfilling his vocational calling in business. His invention of the reaper, and the ensuing business of making and selling reapers, lay the foundation for the advancement and prosperity of America. It enabled one man to do the work of many, increasing his productivity. It also provided for masses of people to be fed. By cultivating the talents and skills God has given us to fulfill his vocational call on our lives, we serve the common good and take part in discipling the nations." -- Hugh Weichel
"They didn’t set out to ‘get control’ of a pagan culture. They let the gospel change how they did their work and what that meant as they worked for others instead of themselves. Christians today should be aiming for the same thing." -- Tim Keller
2nd Truth: Whatever your DIFFICULTY in life, use it to give glory to God (Rom. 5:3-5).
Sweet blind singer over the sea
Tuneful and jubilant, how can it be
How can she sing in the dark like this
What is her fountain of life and bliss?
Oh, her heart can see, her heart can see!

English hymnwriter, Frances Havergal
Romans 5:3-5
3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
(1) There are events in our life that are so crushing they are meant to break you (Rom. 5:3)
"If perfect human sight were offered to me tomorrow, I would not accept it…Although it may have been a blunder on the physician’s part, it was no mistake of God’s. I believe it was his intention that I should live my days in physical darkness, so as to be better prepared to sing his praises and incite others so to do." - Fanny Crosby
(2) Those events, when endured, can strengthen your inner man (Rom. 5:3)
(3) As you are spiritually strengthened, it reveals your genuine faith (Rom. 5:4)
(4) As your present faith grows stronger, so does your confident hope for the future (Rom. 5:4)
3rdTruth: Whatever your mistreatment in life, use it to grow more dependent on God (2 Cor. 4:4-10).
In his own words:

"I was born in Diamond Grove, Missouri, about the close of the great civil war, in a little one room shanty on the home of Mr. Moses Carver…the owner of my mother.I was a mere boy when converted, hardly 10 years old. God just came into my heart one afternoon while I was alone in the loft of our big barn…I knelt by a barrel of corn and prayed to receive Christ." George Washington Carver
(1) Allow your mistreatment to purify your motive for serving others (2 Cor. 4:4)
2 Corinthians 4:4-10
4 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart… 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.
"To this end, I have been preparing myself for these many years, feeling as I do that his line of education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom to our people."

Carver’s acceptance letter to Tuskegee Institute
(2) Allow your mistreatment to drive you to God for answers (2 Cor. 4:7)

“Mr. Creator. Why did you create the peanut?”
(3) Allow your response to your mistreatment to point others to Christ
(2 Cor. 4:10).

Of his students:

“I want them to find Jesus…How I long for each one to walk and talk with the Great Creator through the things he’s created.”
“He could have added fortune to fame, but caring for neither, he found happiness and honor in being helpful to the world.”

Epitaph on his tombstone
